Gold Coast 'superb': Comm Games boss

Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games organisers have been given a major tick of approval by the event's international federation.

Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) president Louise Martin visited southeast Queensland on Friday to check the progress in preparations for the 2018 event.

Ms Martin says sites such as the games village at Southport Parklands and the Coomera Sports and Leisure on the northern end of the city are very impressive.

"The change in the area is phenomenal," Ms Martin said.

"When I saw the area where the village is, it was a trotting track.

"The transformation in that area alone ... it's superb."

Organisers have come under scrutiny recently amid claims of conflicts of interest and secrecy behind the awarding of the tender to the opening and closing ceremonies to US company Jack Morton Worldwide.

Following that decision, Commonwealth Games minister Stirling Hinchliffe has demanded senior executives from the organising body speak with the Queensland integrity commissioner over potential conflicts of interest.

Ms Martin has however praised organisers, saying they are fully justifying the CGF's decision to award the games to a smaller, non-capital city.

"It was one of the best things that we did because what this does is it shows other cities throughout the Commonwealth that if you have a reasonable size you can still deliver a good games, as long as you've got the backing of your city council and the government," she said.
