Claims man deliberately run down: inquest

An inquest will investigate whether a Queensland woman deliberately ran over and killed a Hong Kong tourist.

The body of Shui Ki Chan, 25, was found in a ditch on the side of the Warrego Highway at Gatton, west of Brisbane, on August 23, 2012.

Mr Chan was visiting Australia and had been riding his bicycle home from the McDonald's where he worked when he was hit, according to documents handed up during a pre-inquest conference in Brisbane on Tuesday.

An autopsy indicated he didn't die from injuries caused by the impact but succumbed to hypothermia after being left in the ditch overnight in cold weather.

Police have been investigating allegations a local woman deliberately hit Mr Chan with her car, after she allegedly confessed to several people.

The woman has not been charged, but will be called as a witness at the coronial inquest in May.

Tuesday's pre-inquest conference heard the woman will be subpoenaed and has been advised to get legal representation.

Counsel assisting the coroner Peter De Waard said Mr Chan's family did not seek leave to appear at the inquest, but has requested a copy of the brief of evidence.

Seventeen people are expected to appear as witnesses - mostly members of the suspected driver's family and other people who know her.

The inquest, before Brisbane Coroner John Hutton, will begin on May 19.
