Civil Libs OK with ambo body cameras

Queensland paramedics should be allowed to wear body cameras as long as they are used in the same manner as police-issued devices, according to civil libertarians.

Queensland Council for Civil Liberties executive member Andrew Sinclair doubted body cameras would prevent violence but there was a sound argument for their introduction.

The Queensland Ambulance Union will later this week ask paramedics if they want to wear body cameras after a woman, who was demanding drugs, stabbed a paramedic on Fraser Island.

Meanwhile, Queensland police are rolling out body cameras to officers across the state.

The body cameras are switched on but not recording during a shift although when activated they will also capture the 30 seconds prior to recording starting.

At the completion of each shift they are placed in a docking station and immediately downloaded.

"If it's subject to the same caveat and safety issues (as the police body camera regulations) it can't hurt," Mr Sinclair told AAP.

"The possible harm it can do is very minimal against the risks it is going to guard against.

"Having said that, I don't think it's going to stop anyone.

"If they aren't paying any attention to the advertising campaign and they're high on drugs they are not thinking straight."
