Damage bill mounts as Brisbane storm insurance claims continue

One of Queensland's largest insurers has assessed more than 17,000 cars that were damaged by a ferocious supercell storm that tore through Brisbane one month ago.
The system carved a path of destruction from Brisbane's southern suburbs, through the CBD and into the north, battering the region with tennis ball-sized hailstones and cyclonic winds in late November.
Suncorp Insurance says more than 29,000 motor and home insurance claims have been lodged.
In excess of 2000 'make safe' tasks, to temporarily repair damaged windows and roofs, have been finished.
The company was also completing 1500 home repairs.
Earlier in December, the Insurance Council of Australia estimated insurance losses had hit $804 million.
Overall, there had been 86,800 claims lodged for property and motor vehicle damage, CEO Rob Whelan said at the time.
