Brisbane ferry strike hits commuters

Brisbane's ferry commuters have been told to find other ways to get to work as more than 130 drivers stage a two-day strike.

Ferry staff are striking as they ramp up demands for better pay and greater job security.

CityCat and CityHopper ferry services are operating on a reduced timetable, and the Kangaroo Point and Normal Park cross-river ferries are not operating at all.

Striking workers have gathered at the Hawthorne ferry terminal, chanting "no guts, no spine" as they demand a better deal from ferry operator Transdev.

Transdev, which has a contract to run ferry services for the Brisbane City Council, says it's doing its best to keep as many services as possible running.

The Maritime Union of Australia has claimed many workers are being paid under-award rates, and many had no sense of job security because they were employed on casual contracts.

It's apologised to commuters for the disruption, but says the company has failed to budge on workers' demands.
