Brake failure caused Hamilton Island buggy crash that injured nine

A buggy crash on Hamilton Island in March that left a nine-month-old baby girl in a critical condition was likely caused by a failed braking system, police have found.
Investigators found that the buggy’s 22-year-old female driver had tried to avoid crashing into the second park buggy, on the popular holiday resort island on March 10.
The owner of the buggy was issued with an infringement notice for permitting its use despite the ‘unsafe equipment’.
Police also allege the buggy was overloaded at the time of the accident, and have issued the driver with an infringement notice.
Forensic Crash Unit investigators found the braking system had failed on a steep descent.
Nine people were injured, including a witness who was treated for shock.
The baby girl suffered head and facial injuries in the crash, and has since recovered.
Other children and adults also suffered a range of injuries including fractures.
All of those injured have since been released from hospital.
Golf buggies are the main mode of transportation on Hamilton Island.
