Queensland records first sub-zero minimum temperature of the year

Queensland has recorded its first sub-zero minimum temperature for the year, while showers and strong winds are set to hit the southern stretches of Australia tomorrow.

Temperatures dipped to -0.4C at Wellcamp Airport this morning in the southern parts of the state. The frosty start to the day could be a sign of things to come, with cold mornings predicted for the next few days across southern parts of the state.

The weather station was not the only one to record low temperatures.

Oakey in the state's Toowoomba region recorded a minimum temperature of 0.3C, while Dalby and Kingaroy residents were also shivering with temperatures of 1.7C.

Warwick in the south-east of the state recorded a minimum temperature of 2.5C and Amberley fared slightly better at 4.1C.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, a slow-moving high over southern Australia is extending a ridge across Queensland with cooler southwesterly winds over southern and central parts of the state.

A weak trough may move east across southern Queensland as a strong high moves across the Great Australian Bight later this week and over the weekend.

This high will extend a firm ridge over Queensland with cooler and drier air spreading across the southern two thirds of the state into early next week.

Across Australia, low-pressure systems and troughs will bring showers and strong winds to Tasmania, Victoria and southern NSW on Wednesday.

Showers are likely to fall as snow in the Alps and possibly in highland Tasmania.

Onshore winds will bring showers to southern South Australia, and similar gusts will cause showers and storms across far north Queensland.
