Qld cannabis linked to Asian crime gang

More than $2 million worth of cannabis seized at suburban southeast Queensland homes was being grown by an organised Vietnamese criminal gang tapping into a "lucrative" market, police say.

Police raided six houses at Goodna, Darra, Oxley and Acacia Ridge at the weekend.

They seized 459 cannabis plants and 10kg of dried cannabis, worth a total of $2.35 million, along with drug-production equipment.

The dedicated hydroponic "grow-houses" used electricity diverted around the homes' meter boxes.

"Only two of those houses were being lived in," Detective Superintendent Jon Wacker said. "In some instances the windows had been barricaded.

"All the houses are in suburbia, with mum, dad and kids residing next door."

Police believe the cannabis was set to be sold in southeast Queensland.

Three Vietnamese nationals have been charged with 41 drug-related offences.

The trio, who are allegedly staying in Australia illegally, are currently being held by the Department of Immigration and Border Patrol.

The arrests were part of the same police operation that busted a $60 million drug syndicate in December, described as the most sophisticated in Queensland's history.

A total of 37 people were charged, the majority Vietnamese nationals.

The operation was run out of a warehouse at Acacia Ridge, with 20 more grow houses found across the state's southeast.

"What we're trying to establish is how far this criminal organisation is entrenched in Queensland," Det Supt Wacker said.

"It's a very lucrative market, cannabis is still the number one drug of choice."
