Push for defibrillators in Adelaide CBD

An Adelaide City councillor wants life-saving defibrillators installed in city streets.

Cr Phillip Martin says it would cost about $100,000 to install 30 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in public places around the CBD.

AEDs come in a small pouches and offer voice prompts to deliver a reviving pulse to patients in cardiac arrest.

"For something like $2100, you can buy a life-saving device and for another couple of hundred dollars, you can put it in a cabinet in a public place and anyone can access the device and use it," he told ABC radio on Tuesday.

"They are so good, they actually talk an amateur through the process of giving a shock.

"If you save one life in the period of one year or two years, what an investment. What a sound investment."

Mr Martin said he got the idea from Tasmania, which has more than 500 defibrillators installed across the state.

He will ask the Adelaide City Council to look into placing AEDs in locations such as Rundle Mall and Chinatown.
