Glassing victim shocked that attacker 'got away with it'

A Perth mother who was glassed at a pub has told 9News she's shocked and angry that her attacker was given a suspended sentence.

Kate Jessop was attacked at The Duke Bar and Bistro in Carramar in June while celebrating her 40th birthday.

Her attacker, Sarah Tester, pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding and received a 12-month suspended prison sentence.

Ms Jessop said the magistrate's decision sent the wrong message.

"It make me really angry, it's sort of putting it out there you can behave however you want and destroy other people's lives and if you're middle class and white, you can get away with it," she said.

The mother-of-two was struck repeatedly on the dance floor and was left with a 4cm-deep cut to her shoulder. Surgery has repaired the muscle but she says the ongoing nerve pain and emotional trauma still impact her daily life.

"To think that one night out in your local could have made my kids orphans and my husband a widower," she said.

Tester, also a mother, pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding. She received a 12-month suspended jail sentence but was not fined.

"The lady has walked away scot-free for what was quite a vicious attack" Ms Jessop said.

She said her attacker didn't necessarily deserve to be locked up but believes a fine would act as a deterrent to others.

"Everyone has to be responsible for their own behaviour, it isn't acceptable to put other people's lives at risk when everyone's out enjoying themselves," she said.
