Edward Herrmann, the veteran Hollywood actor best known for his role as Richard on Gilmore Girls has died. He was 71.

Herrmann had spent three weeks in an intensive care unit at a New York hospital suffering brain cancer, and died yesterday.

The prolific actor played the father and grandfather of the lead characters in Gilmore Girls throughout the run of the show.

He was nominated for Best Actor Emmy awards in the 1970s for playing Franklin D Roosevelt in two made-for-television movies, and later reprised the character in the musical Annie in 1982.

He also featured in movies such as The Aviator, The Lost Boys, The Purple Rose of Cairo and Intolerable Cruelty.

His last role was a guest appearance in How I Met Your Mother in 2013.

He is survived by his wife and three children.
