Police officer injured by suspected car thief in Geelong

A police officer has been injured by the driver of a of a suspected stolen car in Geelong.

Officers had been called to investigate a suspicious car on Madden Avenue, Geelong West, about 8am today.

Two men were found on the street, along with a black Holden Commodore and black Nissan Pathfinder.

The Commodore, suspected to have homemade plates, sped off as the driver of allegedly stolen Pathfinder struggled to start his vehicle.

Officers tried to pull the driver from the Pathfinder, but he started the vehicle and injured one of them while trying to flee, police said.

The offender then drove at other police cars and was last seen driving erratically along Melbourne Road, North Geelong.

Police then called off their pursuit due to safety reasons.

The Pathfinder was found in Colac this afternoon, but its driver remains on the run.
