Police investigate Melbourne tram sexual assault in Bundoora

A man who exposed his genitals and masturbated in front of a young woman on a Melbourne tram is wanted by police.

The 20-year-old Mill Park woman was on a route 86 tram travelling from Plenty Road in Preston to Bundoora about 4pm on April 9 when the incident took place.

Investigators were told the unknown offender boarded the tram at Stop 56 at Plenty Road in Reservoir and engaged in conversation with the victim before exposing himself.

The victim yelled at the man and rushed to the tram driver when the man left the tram at Bundoora.

Transit Crime Investigation Unit detectives confirmed they were investigating the sexual assault.

"Public safety is a top priority for Victoria Police and no one deserves to feel unsafe or uncomfortable when travelling on public transport," Senior Constable Andrew Levey said.

Police have released an image of a man they believe may be able to assist with their enquiries.

The offender is perceived as Caucasian, with dark brown hair and a beard. He also has a medium build, is approximately 175cm tall and aged between 20-25.

He was wearing a dark long sleeve top, pink shorts, a light-coloured baseball cap and black and white shoes.

Detectives have appealed for anyone who might have been on the tram, or who recognises the man, to come forward.

"Police have an excellent success rate when it comes to solving sexual offences on the public transport network due to CCTV cameras and information from the public. This is why we encourage everyone who sees, or is victim to, an offence to come forward," Sen. Const. Levey said.
