Axe-wielding boy charged over 'violent home invasion'

Police have charged a 14-year-old boy over an axe wielding burglary last night in Melbourne’s south-west overnight.

The 14-year-old, from Kew, is alleged to have broken into the La Coruna Gardens home in Point Cook around 3.40am.

Father-of-two Robert Gelevski, 40, awoke to noises and decided to investigate.

“I woke up in bed and saw him in my spare room upstairs, axe in his hand,” Mr Gelevski told 9News.

After diffusing the situation and escorting the teen out, Mr Gelevski locked his front door and called the police.

“I spoke to him calm, told him I had no trouble with him.”

But 10 minutes later the boy allegedly returned.

“He decided to come back, the idiot ,” Mr Gelevski told 9news.com.au.

Mr Gelevski discovered the teen in his garage, this time attempting to take off with the family’s Jeep four-wheel-drive.

He wrestled the axe from the teen, suffering a cut to his right hand in the scuffle.

He locked the teen in the car before police arrived.

Police officers fired a warning shot into the air when they reached the home, believing the teen may still have been armed.

The teen has since been charged with four counts of aggravated burglary, theft, attempted theft of motor vehicle, recklessly causing injury, unlawful assault, assault with a weapon and committing indictable offence while on bail.

He will appear at a children’s court at a later date.
