Turnbull and Shorten use annual Christmas messages to thank those away from home for Christmas

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Opposition Leader Bill Shorten have both thanked emergency services and defence personnel who are giving up their Christmas.

Mr Turnbull also focused his message on urging Australians to think of the less fortunate this Christmas, saying we should share our love beyond family and close friends.

The shadows of poverty, loneliness, illness and loss hang heavier during the festive period, he said in a video recorded at Bondi Beach.

"We can lift some of those shadows by sharing our love with others beyond our family and close friends," he said.

But he has also highlighted the joyful time of year when friends and family are reunited.

"From Lucy and me, and our family, to you and yours, we wish you a very merry Christmas, a relaxing and safe holiday and a 2016 filled with peace, happiness and love."

Speaking in a clip recorded at a shopping centre, Mr Shorten made special mention of Australians working "unsociable" hours this holiday season.

Mr Shorten and wife Chloe said it was important to spare a thought for those Australians who won't be home for Christmas, those serving in the defence forces and emergency services.

The Labor leader also extended a special thank you to the "remarkable" organisations and volunteers helping Australians doing it tough this Christmas.

"Christmas is a time to reflect on the things that matter most - our families, our health and happiness," he said.

"Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and all the very best for a safe and happy new year."
