‘Justice delayed is justice denied’: Peter Greste’s family calls for his release

The family of jailed Australian journalist Peter Greste has used the one-year anniversary of his conviction to again plead for his release.

Working for Qatari media organisation Al Jazeera, Greste had been in Egypt for three weeks when he was arrested and jailed for seven years for allegedly broadcasting false news and aiding a terrorist organisation.

Two of his colleagues, Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed, were also jailed.

His brothers Andrew and Michael today read a statement on behalf of their parents Lois and Juris, ahead of a January 1 appeal hearing.

“The past 12 months have been a rollercoaster ride like no other,” Michael Greste said.

“Today marks 12 months since Peter was arrested simply for being a journalist. 

“We've experienced a great deal of terrible lows and gratefully, a few highs. 

Mr Greste thanked the media and the public for the outpouring of support they had received after their brother was imprisoned.

International media and world leaders have joined the Greste family in campaigning for the journalists’ release, with the Twitter hashtag #freeAJstaff gaining a powerful online following.

The Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance building in the Sydney suburb of Redfern has been adorned with a mural of the imprisoned reporter, painted by street artist and activist Hego.

“We are just a small cog in a massive fight for justice,” Mr Greste said.

“We will not give up seeking his freedom until he is released. 

“Justice delayed is justice denied.” 

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop today said she had been hopeful the trio would be released ahead of today’s anniversary but had received mixed messages from Egyptian authorities.

It seems unlikely any pardon or clemency will be granted ahead of Thursday’s appeal.
