Perth murder accused not fit for trial

An Ethiopian man has been deemed mentally unfit to stand trial in Perth over a stabbing death almost two years ago.
Hafteab Teckle was 29 on August 20, 2015 when he allegedly murdered a 57-year-old man after an argument in Bentley.
On Tuesday, Supreme Court of WA judge Bruno Fiannaca said Teckle was currently not fit to stand trial as he had a major psychotic disorder, with likely delusional and persecutory-type symptoms.
But he had recently begun treatment and was responding well to medication, Justice Fiannaca said, and there was a prospect he could improve sufficiently to stand trial.
A hearing to determine that will be held on August 29.
Justice Fiannaca said Teckle had been in prison since two days after the alleged offence and it would be better for him to be held at the Frankland Centre psychiatric facility where intensive therapy was more readily available.
Teckle, who speaks an Ethiopian dialect and required an interpreter, was remanded in custody.
