The six-year-old boy who went missing in Perth's southern suburbs before being taken to hospital has tragically died.

The boy, known only as Joey, was found seriously injured several streets away from his home in Booragoon, in Perth's south.

Police have cordoned off the cul-de-sac where Joey was discovered and launched an investigation into the incident.

He was located unresponsive in a swimming pool in the rear yard of a nearby property.

The boy's death is not being treated as suspicious.

Police issued an alert at 4pm local time on Sunday, saying the boy had last been seen around Riseley Street in Booragoon

The little boy, who had a blonde mullet-style haircut, was not thought to be wearing any clothes, police said earlier.

They said he may have difficulty communicating with strangers.

St John Ambulance took him to Fiona Stanley Hospital after he was given first aid, police said, adding that they remained at the scene.
