Perth man who assaulted WA firefighter escapes with $500 fine
A Perth man who violently assaulted a WA firefighter while on the job has avoid jail over the cowardly attack.
The 34-year-old firefighter had arrived at Perth's Hostel G last March to assist the hotel staff, after a man was reported to be behaving erratically and tampering with fire alarms.
When he approached his attacker, he was punched in the head several times, before police were forced to taser the man.

The accused faced court today, five months after the attack, avoiding a prison sentence and walking away with a $500 fine for the assault.
The incident has prompted the WA Firefighters Union to call on the McGowan Government to change the criminal code, so that anyone who seriously assaults firefighters will face a minimum six months' jail.
Mandatory sentences are already in place to protect WA police and paramedics.
“We want a government that looks after fire fighter police and ambulance equally,” President of the Union Lea Anderson said
The Opposition Leader has labelled the court outcome as outrageous.
"I believe the attorney-general should be speaking to the DPP about reviewing or appealing this decision," Liza Harvey said.
