Labor's Patrick Gorman seals Perth by-election victory

The Labor Party's replacement candidate for resigned Tim Hammond, Patrick Gorman, will win the Western Australian Federal seat of Perth following today's by-election.

With Mr Hammond ruling himself out from representing in the Parliament, Mr Gorman looked set for a convincing victory today as his next-biggest opponent in the Liberal Party did not field a candidate.

Early poll results have Mr Gorman securing 38.6 percent of the total vote and an 0.8 percent positive swing.

On a two-party preferred basis, the ALP was well ahead in the by-election with 62.6 percent of all votes.

Following Mr Gorman, the Greens' Caroline Perks won 21.6 percent of the vote and a positive 3.9 percent swing for her party, while Independent Paul Collins earned 9.6 percent of votes and the Liberal Democratic Party's Wesley Du Preez 6.3 percent.

The Perth electorate was the only seat of the five Super Saturday by-elections being held today that was not triggered by an MP's dual citizenship concerns.

Mr Hammond last won the seat with a 3.3 percent margin in Labor’s favour but did no re-contest after resigning from politics due to family reasons.

Candidates from the Animal Justice Party, Liberal Democrats, Sustainable Australia, the Australian Mental Health Party, Australian People's Party, the Greens, Science Party, Australian Christians, Australian Liberty Alliance, Citizens Electoral Council, and four independents all contested the seat.
