Pauline Hanson changes party name as polling support surges

Pauline Hanson's One Nation party is changing its name, the eponymous leader has announced.

In a release on her website, the Queensland senator revealed the part would change its name from PHON (Pauline Hanson's One Nation) to simply "One Nation" - a sobriquet by which most Australians already know it.

The release declared the decision a "defining moment for the movement, reaffirming its identity as a voice for ordinary Australians who value fairness, sovereignty, and unity".

"The rebranding reinforces One Nation's commitment to restoring trust in politics, protecting Australian values, and continuing the fight for everyday Australians across every state and territory," the release said.

"With this announcement, Senator Pauline Hanson is once again reminding the country that One Nation stands stronger than ever: one voice, one people, one nation."

One Nation currently holds four federal senate seats, but has no representation in the federal lower house.

Recent polling by Roy Morgan showed One Nation's primary support had risen to 12 per cent in October, compared to 35 per cent for Labor, 27 per cent for the Coalition, and 13 per cent for the Greens.

Party founder Hanson removing her name from the party's official title comes after she rejected suggestions she could hand over leadership to newly-independent MP Barnaby Joyce amid his ongoing rift with the Nationals.

Hanson founded the party in 1997 after she was disendorsed as a Liberal candidate over her call to end special government assistance for Indigenous Australians.
