Six men sought after teen girl's gang rape

A 14-year-old girl gang-raped by six men in a western Sydney park was so traumatised that police had to wait a day before speaking to her.

The teenager was walking a short distance home from a friend's house at 11pm on Saturday through a park in Doonside when she was approached by a man who spoke to her.

He then touched her inappropriately before forcing her to the ground and sexually assaulting her on one of the pathways in Bill Colbourne Reserve.

The man's five friends then took turns sexually assaulting her in an attack that lasted about 30 minutes.

"Part of the delay of us getting the information out to the public is because the young girl was in shock," police Superintendent Gary Merryweather said.

"Her family are nice people ... they're just completely devastated."

The men fled, leaving the girl to walk to a friend's house nearby where police were called and she was taken to hospital.

The men are all described as being of African appearance and aged in their late teens to early 20s.

Some residents reported noises in the park.

Police are hunting the men and believe someone must know the attackers.

"If people (with information) do not ring and contact the police, they are condoning this horrendous behaviour," Supt Merryweather said.

Blacktown Deputy Mayor Russ Dickens said Doonside was usually safe.

"I can't give you any stories of any problems in Doonside," Dr Dickens told AAP.

"Some parts of Doonside are low-socioeconomic areas, others are just the opposite with the new land development out there.

"I'm shocked and it is isolated."

Rape and Domestic Violence Services Australia executive officer Karen Willis said random gang rape would represent less than one per cent of sexual assaults Australia-wide and within NSW.

"The community gets really shocked by it," Ms Willis told AAP.

"We are all appalled and we absolutely should be.

"She had every right to be getting on with her life as she was.

"To those who think they can get away with this stuff, increasingly women are reporting and the police are very proactive."
