Man dies after 4WD hits buffalo in NT

A man has died after a his station wagon hit a buffalo on a remote Northern Territory highway this morning.

Police said the  54-year-old man was travelling in a car with five other people in north-eastern Arnhem Land around 5am when it crashed into the animal.

Their Land Cruiser station wagon rolled on the Central Arnhem Highway, 228km south of Nhulunbuy, Duty Superintendent Chris Board said.

"Tragically a male passenger died at the scene," he said.

The other five occupants of the vehicle were taken to Gapuwiyak clinic for treatment to various non-life threatening injuries, including broken bones.

Some passengers were expected to be taken to Royal Darwin Hospital later today.

"The driver was breath tested at the scene and returned a negative reading," Sup Board said.
