Four-state ATM crime gang arrested in NT

Four men accused of running a crime gang that robbed 65 ATMs in four states have been arrested in Darwin.

Northern Territory police arrested the men in a car in Coolalinga in Darwin's rural area after they were targeted in an operation over the weekend.

Interstate law enforcement agencies had tracked the men, aged 31, 33, 37 and 41, to the NT earlier this month.

They allegedly plundered 65 ATMs in NSW, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia, but had not yet carried out a robbery in the NT.

"They were more than likely casing the ATMs around the place," a Police spokesman told AAP on Monday.

Police say they seized high-tech surveillance equipment and various tools from the men.

The four remain in custody and will be charged later this week.

Once they have faced charges in the NT and after any time served, they are likely to be extradited interstate, possibly more than once.

It is not known how much money the men allegedly stole, but it could total millions of dollars.

"The detection and arrest of such a sophisticated interstate crime gang operating in the Northern Territory will hopefully act as a deterrent for others who may incorrectly consider the NT to be an easy target," Detective Senior Sergeant Karl Day said.
