Former NT Labor leader quits party

FORMER NT LABOR LEADER DELIA LAWRIE RESIGNS:

WHAT HAS HAPPENED

* Former Labor leader Delia Lawrie quit the party on Thursday after being disendorsed in the seat of Karama, which she has held since 2001.

* The party on Saturday decided Ms Lawrie's legal controversy would distract from next year's election bid.

HOW DID IT COME TO THIS

* The embattled politician resigned as Labor leader in April.

* Her resignation came after she was found to have acted unfairly and with bias for her part in a land deal with Unions NT.

* The then-Labor government finalised a deal in 2012 to hand the historic $3 million Stella Maris site in Darwin, built for maritime workers, to Unions NT on a 10-year lease for no rent.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR NT LABOR

* Labor now has seven seats in the NT Legislative Assembly.

* The CLP government has 12 seats.

* There are six independents.
