Young man mourned after NSW train accident

A young man who died in a train accident in the NSW Hunter region has been remembered as a "great bloke" who always made people laugh.

Liam Reeves, 21, died on Friday night when he was hit by a passenger train about 300m east of East Maitland Station.

Mr Reeves was struck while taking a short cut to nearby Victoria Street Station with his friend, 19, to catch a Newcastle-bound train where they had planned to party with friends, Fairfax Regional Media reports.

He died at the scene.

It is understood his friend sustained cuts and bruises and was taken to Maitland Hospital in a stable condition.

Mr Reeves' brother Mark says he's devastated by the loss of his younger brother, who was a "great bloke" and "the most loyal person" he has ever met.

"He will be missed dearly by many of his friends and his family," he told the Maitland Mercury.

"We also express our deepest gratitude for the emergency and rail services who did everything possible to help Liam."

Mark's wife Whitney has since reposted photos from their 2013 wedding to Facebook that show Mr Reeves standing proudly by his brother's side.

The avid gamer, known under the username Sundzhino, has also been honoured in hundreds of posts on the CyberGamer (CG) online forum.

CG user Jewnior said Mr Reeves' banter was "top notch" and he was "always making people laugh", while user Danz remembered him as a "genuinely great guy to play with and talk to".

"RIP Liam, my love and support goes out to your family my man ... take it easy brother," a man named Josh, posted under the username JAYYY.

The gamers have also set up a GoFundMe page to assist the Reeves family with funeral costs.
