Lifeguards have suspended the search for a man feared drowned at a Sydney beach, about 10 hours after his companion was found dead.

Emergency services began searching for the man on Tuesday morning, after a woman's body was found washed up by a jogger at Maroubra Beach.

It's believed the pair were at the beach together on Monday night, according to media reports.

The woman, discovered at about 6am, was a 23-year-old Nepalese student who had arrived in Sydney two weeks earlier to study, the Seven Network reported.

The 25-year-old man was also reported to be a Nepalese student.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter, police and lifeguards on jet skis searched for the missing man on Tuesday in rough conditions, however the search was suspended at about 4pm.

Emergency services will meet again at 7am on Wednesday to decide whether to resume the search, police say.
