Wollongong Coal slapped with another fine

Wollongong Coal Company has been fined $31,000 for polluting a creek - its second environmental fine in less than two years.

Two fines, each $15,000, have been issued by NSW Environment Protection Authority for causing water pollution in the Bellambi Gully last November and for poor maintenance of its diversion pipe from Russel Vale coal mine to the creek.

It was also fined $1000 for failing to publish water quality monitoring data in discharges from the mine to the creek during October-November 2016.

Last July, the EPA fined the company $30,000 for discharge into the same water way.

Anti-coal group Lock the Gate has called on Wollongong Coal Company to have its mining titles revoked.

"This company is a repeat offender for environmental damage," a spokeswoman told AAP on Wednesday.

"They've been given enough chances and need to have their mining titles suspended or cancelled."
