Wealthy donor, 96, on carer assault counts

A 96-year-old philanthropist accused of indecently assaulting two full-time carers at his Sydney home may not be mentally fit to stand trial.

Police allege the two women, aged 21 and 32, were assaulted on at least four separate occasions at his Vaucluse home in the city's east between April and December 2017.

Order of Australia recipient Aron Kleinlehrer is now facing multiple charges of aggravated indecent assault.

Kleinlehrer's defence lawyer appeared on his behalf at Downing Centre Local Court on Monday and indicated he may not be fit to stand trial.

"We are getting him assessed for fitness," Nancy Mikhaiel said.

"He needs MRIs and brain scans."

Court documents state Kleinlehrer allegedly touched the then 32-year-old woman's breast, buttocks and vagina on separate occasions and kissed the then 21-year-old worker on the lips.

Kleinlehrer was awarded Australia Day honours in January for his contribution to the arts in sponsoring Opera Australia, Sydney Symphony Orchestra and The Australian Ballet.

The Polish-born benefactor, who immigrated to Australia in 1949, has also donated millions to The Emmanuel School in Randwick.

His matter will next be heard on September 14.
