Wanted man caught after high-speed chase

A man allegedly wanted on outstanding warrants tried to evade police and sparked a pursuit in NSW's Hunter region.

Police were conducting a speed check on Putty Road at Mellong just after 6pm on Friday when they tried to stop a four-wheel drive allegedly travelling at 125km/h in a 100km/h zone.

Officers pursued the vehicle when it failed to stop but called off the chase as it allegedly reached high speeds and crossed to the wrong side of the road multiple times. However, another pursuit was initiated on Putty Road at Howes Valley.

Road spikes were used and the vehicle left the road and crashed into a tree. The driver, a 34-year-old man, was taken to hospital for minor injuries, as was his passenger, a 37-year-old woman.

The man was charged with a raft of offences including dangerous driving, and was refused bail to appear via video link at Newcastle Bail Court on Saturday.
