Neighbours help rescue disabled woman from fire 'in nick of time'

A neighbour helped rescue a paraplegic woman trapped in her home by a fire which saw the roof collapse.

Wayne Peterkin was mowing his lawn when his friend, known only as Pam, 41, phoned him from inside her burning house in Umina, on the NSW Central Coast, this afternoon.

“She said uncle, uncle, the house is on fire,’” Mr Peterkin told 9NEWS.

“So I’ve run about five streets at 100 miles an hour to get here.

“The place was well and truly alight.”

Mr Peterkin tried to get inside but emergency crews pulled him back.

However, because of his efforts they knew where to look for her, and police kicked down the door.

Pam was found unconscious on the floor.

She taken to hospital and remains in a serious condition.

“The crews got her just in the nick of time,” Inspector Mark Delves from Fire and Rescue NSW said.

Mr Peterkin said: “We all worked together and got her out.”
