Two dead in light plane crash in New South Wales Hunter region

Two men have died after a light aircraft crashed in the New South Wales' Hunter region.

Emergency crews were called to a property at Woodville, about 10kms north of Maitland, after a triple zero call about 12:20pm today.

First responders discovered the bodies of two men inside the wreckage, believed to be aged in their 40s and 70s.

They are yet to be formally identified.

"Officers from Port Stephens-Hunter Police District established a crime scene, which was examined by specialist forensic police," a spokesperson from NSW police said.

The man who made the emergency call, Doug, said he heard a little ultra-plane come over head.

"The wind got up...and he is flying sideways," he said in his call to triple zero.    

"This bloke is in trouble and the wings folded up and he just spiraled to the ground."

Aerial footage of the crash site showed the wreckage of the light aircraft and the bodies of two people draped under a tarpaulin.

The aircraft is believed to have taken off from the Maitland airport 10 kilometers away.

Investigators from the Bureau of Air Safety are expected to attend the scene and will work with police in preparing a report for the coroner.
