Truckie films driver allegedly passed out by Sydney freeway with car still running

A veteran NSW truck driver was shocked to find a motorist allegedly passed out behind the wheel of his car on a major Sydney freeway.

Driving north on the M1, north of Sydney, the veteran truckie — who has asked not to be identified — saw a white Mitsubishi stopped on the side of the road.

After pulling over, he noticed the car was still in "drive" and immediately started filming.

"Gotta be kidding," he can be heard saying in the video, obtained exclusively by A Current Affair.

"Old mate's fallen asleep, sound asleep."

With music still blaring out of the car, the truck driver opens the door, noticing empty bottles of VB at the driver's feet and alcohol on the passenger seat.

"I approached the car and saw a mid-30s to 40s gentleman just asleep, absolutely just passed out," the truck driver told A Current Affair.

"The smell was overwhelming."

The truck driver phoned emergency services and alerted them to the incident.

After 30 minutes, still with no sign of police arriving, the allegedly drunk driver had awoken and driven away.

"He needs to be taken off the road, he needs to be off the road," the truck driver said. "He is a tragedy waiting to happen."

A Current Affair showed the vision to Chief Inspector Phil Brooks, of NSW Police Traffic and Highway Patrol, who says the driver was clearly not in control of his vehicle.

"People that are in these situations really pose a risk not only to themselves, but also other innocent road users," Chief Inspector Brooks said.

NSW Police have confirmed they are investigating the incident.
