A prisoner has been stabbed in the neck by a fellow inmate at a maximum security jail in Sydney.

Emergency services were called to Parklea Correctional Centre, in the city's northwest, at about 9.40am on Tuesday after a 27-year-old man was stabbed by another man while in a common area, a spokeswoman for Corrective Services NSW told AAP.

The man was transported to Westmead Hospital in a stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries, a NSW Ambulance spokeswoman said.
