An alleged $10 million drug lab has been shut down in Sydney’s Inner West after being uncovered just metres from an infants school.

Detectives who had been monitoring the Petersham home since February raided the property on Monday evening before taking two 46-year-old men into custody.

Both have been formally charged over their alleged leadership of the clandestine operation and were refused bail.

Inside the building, officers uncovered rows of precursor chemicals, industrial flasks, funnels, and specialised manufacturing equipment allegedly utilised to produce commercial quantities of the illicit drug.

Specialist Fire and Rescue crews in hazmat suits were deployed to secure the hazardous volatile substances, which are now being catalogued and destroyed.

The location of the covert facility has since sparked disbelief among residents after it was found to be situated within plain sight of the infants school and a children’s playground.

“The most concerning part is that it’s an infant school, so it’s not even a primary school,” a neighbour said.

“It’s basically a pre-school.”

Investigators remained on the scene examining evidence and scouring the makeshift facility.

Detectives confirmed the operation remains active and further arrests are expected to be made.
