Sydney man charged with attempted murder

A Sydney man has been charged with attempted murder after he allegedly bashed and tried to strangle a man.

The 54-year-old man was in his North Parramatta unit when he heard noises outside and opened his door on Monday morning.

A 41-year-old man then allegedly tried to choke the resident, leading to a fight, police say.

During the scuffle, the assailant allegedly punched the resident and tried to strangle him again before the victim managed to leave the unit.

"The 54-year-old man was taken to hospital for treatment of head, neck and throat injuries, and he remains in a stable condition," police said.

The attacker was later arrested at a shopping centre car park at Bangor, in Sydney's south.

He was charged with attempting to strangle or suffocate a person with intent to murder, aggravated break and enter, and two counts of contravening an AVO.

Bail was refused to the man, who's due before Parramatta Local Court on Tuesday.
