Sydney gunman found guilty of murder

The gunman who shot Raymond Pasnin dead outside his mother's western Sydney home has been found guilty of murder.

Daniel Haile, 29, did not deny fatally firing on Mr Pasnin in Pendle Hill in October 2013 but maintained during his long-running NSW Supreme Court trial that he had been acting in self-defence.

It was the Crown case that Mr Pasnin's ex-girlfriend, Louise Catherine Spiteri-Ahern, handed over $4000 to Haile as payment for a pre-arranged hit.

His barrister, Ertunc Ozen, told the jury in his opening address that his client was a "successful drug-dealer" who did not need the paltry $4000 he is alleged to have been paid to kill Mr Pasnin, and that the dead man himself had brought the murder weapon to a meeting with Haile.

On Monday, after lengthy deliberations, the jury returned a guilty verdict against Haile on a charge of murder.

The jury is still considering its verdicts in the case against Spiteri-Ahern, who is charged with murder on the basis of what prosecutors said was a joint criminal enterprise to kill or seriously injure Mr Pasnin.

Two others faced trial alongside Spiteri-Ahern and Haile and remain before the court.
