Sydney driver caught on camera reversing car up freeway

A Sydney driver has been caught on CCTV coming to a standstill on the approach to the Lane Cove Tunnel before reversing the wrong way up the Gore Hill Freeway at 80km/h.

CCTV video shows the driver reversing a total of four times over five minutes, almost triggering multiple pile-ups in the process.

He claims his reason for stopping was because his car was not equipped with an e-TAG toll payment system.

Only after the arrival of an emergency response truck did the driver agree to drive the right way – forward into the tunnel.

The man escaped with a fine and was let off with a warning by police.

A spokesman for road toll company Transurban said the cost of the driver’s behavior could have been “very serious”.

"If someone makes a mistake and jumps onto one of our motorways and is unsure about how to pay, don’t panic,” he told 9NEWS.

“Just keep going, don’t put yourself at risk, there’s three days to pay, and we’ll sort it out later."
