A cleaner who indecently assaulted a student at a Sydney school has been given a 12-month suspended sentence.

Slave Kolevski, 61, was found guilty of one charge of indecent assault of a person under 16 in December last year.

Sutherland Local Court heard the cleaner of more than three years swiped the 11-year-old boy's penis through his pants as he drank from a tap at the end of a fruit break in October 2013.

The boy, who often said hello to Kolevski around the school grounds, gave evidence the cleaner had a "weird look" during the assault, the court heard.

In handing down his sentence on Wednesday, Magistrate Michael Connell said Kolevski seemed to be of prior good character and had been described by references as a "family man".

Despite that, he said there was a considerable need for deterrence because "unfortunately, offences of this type seem to be quite prevalent", he said.

He sentenced Kolevski, who still denies the offence, to a 12-month suspended sentence subject to a good behaviour bond.
