Student occupation protest reaches day 10

A group of Sydney University arts students who have already spent 10 days barricaded inside a building protesting planned cuts to staff and courses, say they won't budge until their demands are responded to.

The Sydney College of the Arts (SCA) students have occupied the top floor of the administration building at Callan Park since August 22 to protest the university's plan to axe several courses, vacate the inner west campus and cut staff numbers by more than half.

"Until they're willing to sit down and talk we're not leaving," organiser Dylan Griffiths has told AAP.

The proposed changes include staff cuts of up to 60 per cent, an end to ceramics, jewellery, and glass classes and studios, and the closure of the Callan Park campus, which is attended by about 700 students.

A couple of days into the occupation, Sydney University released a statement saying it supported "students' right to protest peacefully but its plans for changes to the SCA will remain unchanged".

"Actually, the university is not in any way 'supporting' the protest," fellow organiser Suzi Faiz said.

The students have been taking shifts throughout the past 10 days, with about a dozen occupying the building at any one time.

Numerous protests and rallies have been staged outside the administration building, while more than 20 organisations and politicians have pledged support for the protest.

Sydney University declined to comment.
