'State-of-the-art stadium' for Parramatta

A state-of-the-art stadium in Sydney's western suburb of Parramatta is set to take the crown off Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium as the best rectangular sporting and entertainment facility in Australia.

Plans for the 30,000-seater Western Sydney Stadium have been unveiled on Thursday by the state government, with the $1.6 billion project set to open to fans in 2019.

Lendlease has won the contract to build the future home of the Parramatta Eels and Western Sydney Wanderers, Premier Mike Baird and Sports Minister Stuart Ayres announced in a statement.

"This design boasts Australia's steepest stands to ensure fans will be closer to the action than they are at Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium, or any other in the country," said Mr Baird.

Pirtek Stadium will be demolished early next year so work can begin on the new facility.

The state government says the project will create up to 1200 jobs during construction phase and at least 900 jobs with the permanent venue.

Boasting the steepest stands to ensure fans will be closer to the action, along with wifi and a Gold energy and environment design rating, Western Sydney Stadium will set a new standard for sporting experience, Mr Ayres said.
