Seven dead on our roads these holidays

The national holiday road toll has reached seven, with the deaths of two men in Victoria and another on the Gold Coast.

A man died on Monday after his ute collided with a petrol tanker at an intersection in Geelong at 5pm.

The crash also injured his passenger, a woman in her 20s, who was flown to The Alfred hospital with chest injuries.

She was in a serious but stable condition, while the driver of the truck was uninjured.

Also on Monday, a 50-year-old was run over in Broadbeach Waters on the Gold Coast, after an argument he'd become involved in spilled into the street around 1:25am.

Weapons were found at the scene while two men, aged about 20, were wearing dark clothing and had their faces covered, police say.

Detective Acting Inspector Greg Aubort wouldn't say if the man was involved in a "gathering" at the address.

"There's no evidence to suggest he was involved in the lead-up to this incident, it may be a case of the wrong place, wrong time," he said.

Earlier in Victoria, a 37-year-old man died in hospital following a crash on the Ballarat-Maryborough Road at Clunes, near Ballarat, on Christmas Day

Police say the car ended up in the front yard of a house after the driver and sole occupant failed to negotiate a bend and the car left the roadway.

The incidents bring the number of people killed on Australia's roads so far this holiday season to seven.

Thirty-four people died on the nation's roads during the 2015/16 holiday period, which runs from December 23 to January 3.
