Former gang member targeted by gunmen outside popular gym in Sydney shooting

Gunfire erupted outside a shopping centre in Sydney's south-west this morning in what police say appears to be an attack towards an alleged former gang member outside a gym.

Police were called to the World Gym at the Home Centre on Steer Road, Gregory Hills, about 8.35am.

Officers found a number of shots had been fired at a man outside the gym.

The alleged target was Steve Hallaby, a professional boxer and alleged former member of the True Kings crime gang.

An image published by Instagram account SCN Worldstar appears to show one of the alleged shooters fleeing the scene.

Further video appeared to show two gunmen firing at Hallaby as he ran for cover.

The intended target is believed to have left the scene immediately in a white Toyota Hilux.

There have been no reports of injuries.

Police confirmed two males were seen in the car park, carrying guns and dressed in black clothing and face coverings.

The pair remain on the run.

The getaway car was found stripped of its licence plates near Camden Airport, seven kilometres away from the scene.

The attack was captured on a dashcam, as well as multiple security cameras, and numerous witnesses were talking to police.

Detective Chief Inspector Gretchen Atkins confirmed police had spoken to the man targeted in the shooting, and that he was not assisting with inquiries at this time.

"He is known to police, he does have extensive history with us. He's not assisting us with our enquiries at this point in time," she said.

Customers sheltered in place as gunfire broke out.

"I was just getting my ticket to get my test, and I just turned around and heard six shots," a teenage witness who was at Service NSW said.

"I saw my dad standing in the doorway, and I was so scared, I was just yelling at him to come inside."

"We locked the doors of Service NSW and stayed inside until police were here," the girl's father said.

"Our car was hit. We were just asked for some details and then told that we could leave for the day and come back," another witness said.

One witness, Lucas, told 2GB saw two men with "balaclavas on their heads and handguns" open fire with "eight or nine shots".

Another, Jack, said he had been in the Service NSW outlet in the centre when "about 10" gunshots were fired in the car park.

He said all the people in the Service NSW centre were sheltering in a back room while waiting for the all-clear by police.

Atkins praised businesses in the area for allowing people inside and securing their premises, as a number of bullets struck buildings and cars in the area.

"We are very, very fortunate no person was injured," Atkins said, pointing out how busy the carpark and centre had been at the time.

Some stores remained closed for the day. Others reopened once the crime scene tape came down.
