Shark tower for Sam Morgan attack beach

Shark observation towers and emergency evacuation alarms will be rolled out at select NSW beaches after the latest attack, this time on a junior champion surfer.

Sam Morgan, 20, was mauled by a suspected bull shark while surfing off Lighthouse Beach at Ballina on the state's north coast on Tuesday.

That beach will now host a new observation tower, as will Manly Beach, One Mile Beach at Port Stephens and Warilla Beach at Shellharbour.

Local councils will be handed the funds and will be responsible for the roll-out.

Primary Industries Minister Niall Blair announced the cash boost on Thursday, which comes on the back of a $16 million shark protection strategy.

"This is just one of the measures the NSW government is putting in place to protect beachgoers from Bega to Tweed Heads," Mr Blair said.

He has also allocated Surf Life Saving NSW more than $8000 for emergency evacuation alarms.

Beaches in Ballina reopened on Wednesday night following a 24-hour closure from the time of the attack.
