Second fatal shooting in Newcastle

Newcastle has been rocked by the second fatal shooting in two days but police don't believe the deaths are linked.

A 71-year-old man was fatally shot in the chest at a home in Mayfield, in the city's northern suburbs, on Sunday, police said.

The shooting comes a day after a 41-year-old man was shot at a house in Wickham, five kilometres away.

The 41-year-old's father was at home with him at the time. Police are trying to piece together what happened.

Detectives are looking for a number of men who were nearby at the time.

No arrests have been made in either case.
