Police say all 'hands-on' offenders in the 'callous' kidnap and murder of innocent Sydney woman arrested

Police believe that they have arrested all the "hands-on" members involved in the alleged kidnapping and murder of a Victorian drug syndicate member's wife in Sydney last year after charging a second alleged "kill crew".

Thi Kim Tran, 45, was at her home in Bankstown about 10.30pm on April 17 when a group of men allegedly forced their way in and kidnapped her at gunpoint.

The men are accused of assaulting an eight-year-old boy with a baseball bat, putting him in a coma, before forcing the woman into an SUV.

A 15-year-old boy also present during the home invasion was taken to hospital for assessment.

About an hour later, a car was found burning on Welfare Avenue in nearby Beverly Hills.

Fire crews extinguished the blaze, but the car was destroyed, and police found Tran dead inside.

Police will allege the crimes are connected to a Victorian drug syndicate in which Tran's husband was involved before he fell out with the group, after they believed he had "stolen a large quantity of drugs from them".

Homicide Squad Commander Joe Doueihi said nine members across both kill crews have since been arrested for the "absolutely callous" attack.

He added police have now arrested all the offenders who were "hands-on in the crime" and authorities are now looking to arrest "the upper echelons of that crime syndicate".

"We have identified a number of persons of interest that we are looking at in relation to that potential contract that was put out," he said.

"We will allege the four males travelled from Sydney to Victoria, where they formed part of a criminal joint enterprise to locate the victim's husband in order to murder him and his associate.

"When they couldn't locate the victim's husband, they then notified the Sydney kill crew who had pre-planned and pre-prepared to kill the intended victim's wife from Bankstown."

Police will allege the purpose of the kidnapping was to lure the husband back to the address in Victoria.

"That never eventuated, and (allegedly) the Sydney kill crew continued with the kidnapping and murder of (Thi Kim Tran), the Melbourne crew then returned to Sydney," Doueihi said.

"He was aware that the syndicate was looking for him, and he took steps to protect himself, unfortunately, he didn't take steps to protect his wife."

Authorities believe that if Tran's husband had arrived at the address in Victoria, the kill crew would not have killed her.

"If they had found Ms Tran's husband, there would have been no need for them to go to the Bankstown address," Doueihi said.

"This was a premeditated crime of the highest order, the kidnapping and abduction of an innocent woman."

Since last December, five others have been charged over their alleged role in Tran's abduction and murder.

On December 16, police arrested a 26-year-old man following a raid on a property in Monterey in southern Sydney.

Later on January 16, detectives arrested a man aged 22 at Sydney airport, before they took into custody a 30-year-old man at the same location on February 21.

On March 18, two men – aged 18 and 25 – were arrested in Silverwater and Lithgow.

All were refused bail and charged with murder, firearms offences and participating in criminal group activity.

Police have said the victim's husband is now assisting in their inquiries.
