Police say a personal locator beacon was "crucial" in saving the life of a man who went missing in NSW's Blue Mountains.

David Elliot, 71, was last seen about 5.30am on Monday in Dunphys Camp Ground, Megalong Valley, where he told his family he was going on a 30-kilometre bushwalk.

Officers were notified yesterday at 7.30pm on Monday that he failed to return, launching a multi investigation into his whereabouts.

NSW Police searched the area until 11.30pm on Monday.

The search resumed at 9.30am yesterday involving local police, assisted by Police Rescue, NSW SES and NSW RFS.

Police and family were concerned for Elliot's welfare due to the weather and rugged terrain but at 3pm yesterday they aught a break when his personal locator beacon was detected.

He was winched out at 7.30pm and airlifted to Nepean Hospital for further assessment.\

Acting Inspector Michael Brown said preparing essential tools could be a game changer in an urgent life-or-death situation to bush walkers.

"While Blue Mountains National Park is a well-known place for bushwalkers, it is important to always plan your trip carefully," he said.

"The 71-year-old man had a personal locater beacon(PLB) and it was crucial in saving his life.

While Elliot is an experienced bushwalker, he was not properly dressed for the overnight weather conditions.

"Bushwalkers are urged to always submit trip intention form to the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Services and to have enough clothing, food ,water and a personal locator beacon (PLB) with you," Brown said.

"These items will help you stay hydrated, maintain your body temperature, and get helps promptly when you are lost."
