Search for 'murdered' NSW baby postponed

NSW Police have postponed their search for the buried remains of a newborn baby suspected of being murdered up to a decade ago.

Homicide detectives spent hours scouring dense bushland at a South Maroota property on Tuesday after a tip-off led police to the area northwest of Sydney.

The search did not resume on Wednesday morning.

"It's been postponed as police are waiting for some further information," a NSW Police spokeswoman told AAP.

Detectives had been told a child was born in either late 2007 or early 2008 to a woman believed to have been in her late teens.

It's believed the child was murdered and buried shortly after it was born.

Detective Chief Inspector Angelo Memmolo on Tuesday said any investigation involving the death of a baby was challenging and delicate.

"This incident is of great concern to us," he said, calling for anyone with information to contact authorities.

Strikeforce Enact, which led the search, has worked closely with the Department of Family and Community Services and NSW Health.
