A NSW police dog named Johnno is the force's latest hero after tracking down an injured woman who spent the night outdoors on a rural property in the state's northeast.

The clever canine and his handler, Senior Constable Adam Gersback, found the injured 66-year-old near a dam on the property, south of Tamworth, on Wednesday morning after she was reported missing the night before.

She had suffered lacerations and was taken to Tamworth Base Hospital for treatment.

Acting Superintendent Jeff Budd has praised the actions of the duo for providing a happy ending "at a highly emotional time for a local family".
