NSW to crack down on dodgy cladding

The NSW government will be contacting property owners after discovering 1000 buildings potentially contain highly flammable cladding.

Better Regulations Minister Matt Kean on Friday announced a 10-point plan that will force property owners to pay for inspections, as well as new laws to crack down on those who sign off on dodgy building materials.

The safety package comes after London's Grenfell Tower tragedy in mid-June killed at least 80 people in the 24-storey block of flats.

Mr Kean said he was "sick to death" of hearing stories about dodgy certifiers acting for developers rather than the community.

A separate audit will determine if any government buildings have aluminium cladding, with an initial focus on public housing.
